Wootz or PULAD-E GOHARDAR

In the ancient Indo-Persian region they produced steel containing relatively high concentrations of carbon (1.2 – 2.0 percent). Carbon (in the form of leaves or charcoal powder) and iron were put into a crucible, whereby a transformation into steel was induced. The specific feature of this steel is its damascus structure. This structure is brought about through the slow ’from-the-melt-cooling-down’ speed in combination with the subsequent heat-treating and forging steps.

This is why Wootz / Pulad is also known as crucible damascus steel.
